TRANSFERS
Transfers are used to safely get a client from one surface to another. Transfer methods can be used when transferring to and from the toilet, shower, bed, or a desired destination.
Before deciding the best way to transfer a client, you want to consider the level of injury and pain. This will keep the pain from escalating and prevent further injury. You want to assess their ROM, balance, and overall function before transferring.
You should use a gait belt or other transferring devices if needed. The purpose of a gait belt is to catch the client when they are falling and to keep from injuring yourself. Gait belts are good to use in general when transferring a client even if you think they are steady on both feet. You may consider using transfer boards when transferring a client if they do not have the ability themselves.
If the client is in a wheelchair, it is important to know how to place the wheelchair. It is also important to make sure you take off the foot rests, the arm rests, and put the brakes on to keep the client from falling or keep the wheelchair from slipping away. It is important to know how to place and use other assistive devices your clients might have.
You should consider the environment you are in when making a transfer. It is important to look at the floor to prevent you or the client from tripping over objects. You should look where you're transferring the patient to make sure it is a clean surface and easy to access.
Communicating with clients on cues and informing them what will be happening will aid in successful transfers. It is important to communicate with your client because you do not want them wrapping their arms around your neck and accidentally injuring yourself.
