Occupational Therapy, Breast Cancer and Pilates
Occupational Therapy, Breast Cancer, and Pilates Podcast
Naomi Aronson OT, CHT had her own clinic and marketed it to breast cancer surgeons. Women found Naomi because she would put brochures about her clinic in areas that were related to her area of specialty. She had patients that were post reconstruction, post mastectomy, and things of that nature. She left that aspect of her practice because billing insurance became difficult. Today, Naomi works with breast cancer patients but on the Pilates side of things. She also uses Pilates with her hand patients.
Naomi sees clients during all stages of breast cancer. A lot of breast cancer survivors live with the effects of the medications they were on. Some of the medications can cause them to have Osteoporosis in the future. She notes that it is important to read the chart and ask your patients what medications they were on/still taking. A lot of her clients that were referred to her would not be for breast cancer specifically. It would be other diagnoses that were caused by the cancer or something completely unrelated, but it played a factor in how she treated her clients. Naomi notes that over the course of her career, Pilates shows clients how to use their scapula and regulate breathing. One of the reasons Pilates is beneficial to breast cancer patients is because it teaches you to breathe. Pilates breathing is different than yoga breathing. Pilates breathing moves your rib cage which is important for a person with breast cancer or in remission. Naomi goes into more detail on the podcast which I have linked below because I found it interesting and loaded with great information.
